Chemical Composition/Ingredients
The GHS is an acronym for The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. The GHS is a system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labelling of chemicals. Chemicals are associated with codes that define their health, physical and environmental hazards. This universal hazard communication system was developed to ensure that employers, employees and consumers are provided with adequate, practical, reliable and comprehensible information on the hazards of chemicals, so that they can take effective preventive and protective measure for their own health and safety.

EU Hazard Classification Directive 67/548/EECHazard Symbols are used to classify dangerous substances.
Hazard SymbolsRisk Phrases, denoted as a series of numbers preceded by the letter "R" indicate the nature of the special risks, in accordance with Annex III to Directive 67/548/EEC (see Article 23(2)(d) Directive 67/548/EEC). The numbers are separated by either a comma to denote separate statements concerning special risks, or an oblique stroke (/) to denote a combined statement, in a single sentence, of the special risks.
Risk PhrasesSafety Phrases, denoted as a series of numbers preceded by the letter "S" indicating the recommended safety precautions, in accordance with Annex IV to Directive 67/548/EEC. The numbers are separated by either a comma to denote separate statements concerning safety precautions, or an oblique stroke (/) to denote a combined statement, in a single sentence, of the safety precautions.
Safety PhrasesSVHC is a substance (identified by the European Chemicals Agency) that may have serious and often irreversible effects on human health and the environment. SVHC are defined in Article 57 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (“the REACH Regulation”) and include substances which are:
SVHC?
1. Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or toxic to Reproduction (CMR), meeting the criteria for classification in category 1 or 2 in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC or in category 1a or 1b in accordance with EC No 1272/2008This directive was recently replaced by the new EU regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
2. Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) or very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative (vPvB) according to the criteria in Annex XIII of the REACH Regulation, or
3. Identified, on a case-by-case basis, from scientific evidence as causing probable serious effects to human health or the environment of an equivalent level of concern as those above (e.g. endocrine disrupters).-- 065996-93-2 -- -- -- -- -- 001332-58-7 -- -- -- -- -- 014808-60-7 -- Xn -- -- -- Click on each chemical for information on chemical structure, properties and health effects.

Warnings
Dark brown to black, thick consistency liquid. Studies by Koppers Industries, Inc. (Using Refined Coal Tar Emulsion Safely, 1991) show that emissions during manufacture and application of coal tar emulsion are well below OSHA exposure limits. Avoid prolonged and repeated contact with skin. Dermatitis may result from exposure of individuals with sensitive skin. Refined coal tar is a collection of organic compounds, primarily poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons ranging from one ringed to 30 or 40 ringed in size. It is estimated that as many as 5,000 compounds may be present. Some of these poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons may be those which have been known to induce cancer in animals under laboratory conditions according to NTP, IARC or OSHA. Respirable crystalline quartz has been found to be a suspected carcinogen by NTP, although no exposure is expected through the use of this material. This product has not been tested in long term, chronic exposure tests..

Acute health effects
From MSDS:
Hazards Identification
Potential Health Hazards
Potential health effects may vary depending upon the duration and degree of exposure.
Eye contact: Can cause severe irritation, redness, tearing, and blurred vision. Repeated or prolonged exposure may cause permanent eye damage.
Skin contact: Prolonged or repeated contact can cause moderate irritation, dermatitis. Coal tar is a phototoxic substance which in the presence of sunlight can cause a reaction similar to severe sunburn.
Inhalation: Prolonged exposure to airborne mist concentrations significantly beyond workplace exposure limits could cause respiratory difficulty.
Signs and symptoms of overexposure:
Eyes or Skin: Itching or burning
-
Chronic health effects
From MSDS:
This product as with any chemical may enhance allergic conditions on certain people. Above results are based on similar product testing. No human exposure data is available. This product contains petroleum solvent. Materials similar to petroleum solvent have been shown to produce skin cancer in laboratory animals following repeated exposure without washing or removal. -
Carcinogenicity
Coal tar pitch volatiles, soots tars and oils are listed as a carcinogenic category by OSHA, ACGIH, the National Toxicological Program (NTP) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Prolonged or repeated contact may lead to dermatitis; and with poor hygienic practices, to more serious skin disorders such as ulcerations, benign skin growths and skin cancer.
-
Handling information
Keep people away. Add sand, earth or other suitable absorbents. Avoid breathing vapors and contact with skin. Ventilate confined spaces; open all windows and doors. Keep product out of sewers and water courses by diking or impounding.
-
Disposal information
This product, when discarded or disposed, is not specifically listed as a hazardous waste in federal regulations.
-
California Prop. 65 Warning
Contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm.
-
First Aid
Eye contact: Immediately flush eyes thoroughly with water. Continue flushing eyes for at least 15 minutes, including under lids to remove all particles. Contact a physician.
Skin contact: Wash exposed skin thoroughly with waterless hand cleaner and soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and do not reuse until thoroughly laundered. If skin irritation develops, seek medical attention
Inhalation: Remove the victim to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If not breathing, give artificial resuscitation, and seek immediate emergency medical attention.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. If conscious, have the victim drink plenty of water, and contact a physician immediately.
